A Song About…

The inner thoughts of a single woman measuring how safe a man is to ‘do life’ with.

Deciding to walk in relationship with a man is like getting into a car with him. I believe the man is the head of the woman (unpopular opinion in 2021, I know). He is the driver of the car and the woman is the passenger. She has to be able to trust him in order to get into his car and let him drive them both to their destination.

It’s so exciting to meet someone new! We often ignore the glaring warning signs telling us he's not a good fit. Sometimes red flags are our own emotional traumas telling us we’re unsafe when we actually are, but sometimes lust for other things tells us we're safe when we actually aren't.

Women need discernment while dating! Ask questions and trust your intuition. If I get into this 'car' with you, where exactly are we going? Are you sober enough to drive? Where will we end up? Will we get there alive?! Who will you ask for directions?

Inspiration

A friend of mine shared a story about a pretty traumatic experience she had with a guy she liked. He took a prideful/arrogant tone with her during a face to face conversation that rocked her. I asked her, “Is there one word that you would use to describe how you felt at that moment” and she answered “Unsafe”. I thought that was so beautifully honest and powerful. I started to think about other times in life we might feel unsafe that are universally understood, and the concept of drunk drivers came to mind - so I wrote DUI.

DUI Lyrics

Verse 1
Let's go for a ride he said
It's safe, it got you
Alarms ringing In my head
Cuz I've heard that mix of words before
and then his vision starts to blur
Till he can’t see me anymore

Hook
I wanna be close to you, I do
But I can smell the booze on your breath screaming out like an SOS
I wanna be close to you, I do
But staying over here when your impaired it hurts me less
I don't know what's in your cup
But i’m not getting in
Till you sober up

Verse 2
Lets go nowhere real fast, he meant
Even with my seatbelt on
I don't feel safe in your hands
You be lost
Too proud to get direction
Foot on the gas
Out here driving wreckless
What a mess this is

Hook
I wanna be close to you, I do
But I can smell the booze on your breath screaming out like an SOS
I wanna be close to you, I do
But staying over here when your impaired it hurts me less
I don't know what's in your cup
But i’m not getting in

Bridge
On this road to nowhere
Speeding tickets turn into DUIs
I don't want that for you or I
These types of crashes lead to massive casualties
And I don't want that for you
No I don't want that for me

Hook
I wanna be close to you, I do
But I can smell the booze on your breath screaming out like an SOS
I wanna be close to you, I do
But staying over here when your impaired it hurts me less
I don't know what's in your cup
But i’m not getting in
Till you sober up
